Fatty liver, often the initial stage of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), isn’t triggered by alcohol consumption, though alcohol intake can exacerbate the condition. Research indicates that NAFLD prevalence stands at approximately 94% among individuals with a BMI over 30kg/m² and 64% among those classified as overweight.
NAFLD encompasses various conditions stemming from liver fat accumulation, typically affecting individuals who are overweight or obese. Its stages include:
- Simple fatty liver
- Non-Alcoholic Steato Hepatitis (NASH)
- Fibrosis
- Cirrhosis – the most severe stage, characterised by liver scarring, potentially leading to liver failure and, in some cases, liver cancer.
What are the symptoms and signs of Fatty Liver?
Most individuals with fatty liver remain asymptomatic, with diagnosis typically occurring during routine blood tests and scans for unrelated conditions. However, some may experience fatigue, weakness, and right-sided abdominal discomfort.
Medical Conditions Associated with NAFLD
NAFLD sufferers often contend with various weight-related medical issues, such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, PCOS (polycystic Ovary Syndrome), infertility, and erectile dysfunction.
Diagnosis of NAFLD
NAFLD diagnosis involves blood tests and scans. We offer advanced diagnostic methods, including the Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF) test, preferred by National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines, along with FIB4 score, NAFLD score, and fibroscan assessments. A gastroenterologist may be involved as needed during the program.
Treatment of NAFLD
In its early stages, weight management is pivotal. Addressing weight-related medical conditions is also essential, along with significant alcohol restriction or abstinence. Liver transplant becomes an option in advanced stages.
Consequences of Untreated NAFLD
Without treatment, NAFLD may progress to NASH and eventually cirrhosis, characterised by symptoms like nausea, vomiting, fatigue, jaundice, and abdominal swelling. Treatment aims to halt deterioration and reverse damage when possible.
