Diabetes distress is the emotional strain caused by the constant self-management required for diabetes, including concerns about long-term complications, social stigma, and the burden of daily care. At least 1 in 4 people with diabetes experience distress, which can negatively impact their management. It may manifest as irritability, lack of motivation, avoiding medical appointments, or feeling isolated. Unlike clinical depression, diabetes distress is an emotional response to living with diabetes. If left unaddressed, it can lead to burnout.
